Seton Hall Entertainment and Sports Law Society announces plans for Fall 2010

After crowning its new Executive Board in April, 2010, the Seton Hall Entertainment and Sports Law Society has announced its plans for the Fall 2010 Semester, including a reprise of its sold-out event from 2009, "Breaking Into Sports and Entertainment Law". Details for the events follow below:

August 25, 2010- General Meeting- The first meeting of the semester will take place on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 4:00pm in the Large Moot Court Room of Seton Hall Law School. Refreshments will be provided and programs for the semester will be highlighted, along with externship opportunities available to students and information about the entertainment concentration currently offered. This is a great opportunity for all students, especially 1Ls, to get involved with the organization right from the start. Elections for Student Bar Association Representatives will be conducted at the meeting.

September 9, 2010- Pre-Game NFL Kick-Off Party- After the wildly successful event in 2009, the NFL Kick Off party will re-emerge in 2010 as the Minnesota Vikings take on the Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints. The event will take place from 7:30-11:00pm at Port 44 Brew Pub on Commerce Street in Newark, NJ. The event will include raffles for sports and entertainment giveaways and special appearances throughout the night.

November 3, 2010- Breaking Into Sports and Entertainment Law- The best way to describe this event is to come out and say it... NOT YOUR TYPICAL NETWORKING EVENT. After a sold-out, standing room only crowd raved about the event last year, Seton Hall's ESLS is bringing back the event that you asked for. Featuring a very intimate format that allows for students to sit amongst the movers and shakers of the entertainment and sports industries, the event is designed for maximum student interaction. Rather than recite prepared speeches or tell life stories, our distinguished guests come to the event having engaged in no preparation. The students are required to submit a series of questions that they can ask to the speakers in a free-flow format, with moderation taking place only to kick off the event. This allows the students to get personal time with each speaker and to ask the questions that they are most curious about. And, as expected, most students are most curious about how the speakers ended up in their current positions, what they do on a day to day basis, and suggested "yellow brick roads" to follow post-graduation from law school. The event is sports business casual and attendance is on a strick first-come, first-served reservation basis, pending proper submission of required materials. Seton Hall welcomes alumni attendees and any interested persons from other law schools.

The Arts Law Society hosts a Google Symposium

Tomorrow, the Arts Law Society of Seton Hall Law School is hosting a one-of-a-kind event on Google and its copyright/trademark law implications. The event features an Introduction to Google by Professor Shagin, an overview on Google and Books (The Google Library Project and Author's Guild Litigation) by Professor Jennings, and concludes with information on the Google Litigation (Viacom v. YouTube) by Nancy Mertzel, Director of Copyrights at The Gibbons Institute. There will be a brief Q&A session, followed by a reception with the panelists to follow.

The event will be held at 6:00pm in the Student Lounge.

April 2nd, 2010: Vermont Law School Sports Law Symposium

The Vermont Law School’s Sports and Entertainment Law Society will present a panel discussion on Friday, April 2, on age limits in professional sports.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will be from noon to 2 p.m. in the Chase Community Center.

Panelists will include:

• Alan Milstein, a nationally-acclaimed sports litigator who represents NBA players Allen Iverson and Eddy Curry, among others, and who served as lead counsel for Maurice Clarett in Clarett v. NFL;

• Mike Zarren, the Boston Celtics' assistant executive director of basketball operations and associate counsel; and
  

• Ryan Rodenberg, an assistant professor at Florida State University’s Department of Sport Management, former counsel at Octagon sports agency, and author of articles on age limits in the NBA, professional tennis, and the LPGA. Mr. Rodenberg runs the website http://sportslawprofessor.com/

Professor Michael McCann, who is Sports Illustrated's Legal Expert and who worked for Mr. Milstein in the Clarett case, will moderate.

The debate over age limits in professional sports centers on lucrative contracts and marketing deals, anti-trust issues and labor laws, and whether young athletes have the physical and emotional maturity to compete with older players.

The NFL and NBA have age-based eligibility requirements, but professional baseball, golf, hockey, tennis and other sports leagues either have no minimum age requirement or allow players under age 18 under certain requirements. The NCAA declares players ineligible for collegiate sports once they declare themselves eligible for the pro draft and sign with agents.

Internship Opportunity (Sports Law) with NHL Enterprises

Description of Position: NHL Enterprises, L.P. is the licensing and marketing arm of the National Hockey League and we are currently recruiting New York-area 1Ls for our Legal Internship program. Our Legal Department works closely with all the business units of NHL Enterprises in connection with their wide-ranging activities, including consumer products licensing, special events, sponsorships, sweepstakes and Internet activities. Because of the small size of the NHL Enterprises Legal Department, our interns work closely with our attorneys, playing a vital and active role in a wide range of projects and matters. The internship provides hands-on experience in a diverse legal practice, including in the areas of intellectual property, contracts and litigation, among others. In the past, our interns have handled trademark and copyright enforcement matters, drafted license agreements, reviewed sweepstakes rules, prepared briefs to be filed with the U.S Trademark Office, and researched and cleared uses of historical NHL team logos and other properties. Our interns are also given the chance to work directly with various NHL Enterprises business people and to participate in meetings, providing even greater exposure to the many legal and business issues in which the NHL Enterprises Legal Department is involved. The paid internship lasts for one full calendar year ending approximately on the one year anniversary of your start date with us.
